Opinion: Lessons From Donald Trump\’s Impeachment Proceedings By Barrister Salifu Oguche Usman

Aside Donald Trump\’s excellent economic policies that restored the past glory of American Economy in terms of: wealth creation, employment generation, and the general improvement in the standard of living, one of the talking point of Trump\’s administration was the event that led to the  capitol riot  in which one woman was killed and several others wounded.

Recall that Trump Donald Trump did not concede defeat to Joe Biden of the Democrat as he held a firm believe that November 3rd 2020 presidential election was massively rigged in favour of the Democrat.

This perception by Donald Trump made his supporters to stage a mother of all protest at the Capitol city in which American preach for democracy was brought to under serious questioning and scrutiny.

Though, Trump\’s administration has come to an end but the said event has generated a lot of concerns as both the house of the Lord and the house of the common have moved for impeachment.

Be that as it may, there are divergent opinion in both houses either in support and against Trump\’s impeachment.

For this reason, the impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump like in a normal society has reached an advanced stage and just Tuesday being 9th February 2021, there was a public hearing to that effect on CNN.

In what seems to be a comparative analysis of American system of government (where institutions are given high premium above humans) to that of African system of government, one of ourworldgist \’s Guest writers, \’Brilliant Barrister Salifu Oguche Usman\’  in what he titles: \” Lessons From Donald Trump\’s Impeachment Proceedings\” he alluded thus:

\” I watched the duo of Stacey Placket and Reps Maideilene Dean made their respective cases as Impeachment managers against the immediate past President of the United States of America last night and same has left me thinking all through the night.

From their respective presentations before the panel, one has no difficulty in coming to terms with the sanctity of the American system and the reverence and awe with which the American politicians carry the American institution.

I watched with awesomeness how deep their love is for the Legislative institution they both represent, how sacrilegious the conducts of the mob that attacked the Capitol on the 6th January, 2021 is to them and how heart broken they were that their very hallowed Chambers were broken into and ransacked by thugs.

Though the two managers as well as others are majorly Democrats in party affiliation, yet their grievance is centred around the desecration of the American symbol of democracy, the Legislature and it\’s Capitol.

I also saw with enormous surprise the passion with which they made their cases against Donald Trump and how firm they are in calling for the Law\’s sledge hammer against him. Again, I realized that in ideal democracies, individual office occupants are not demi gods, they are secondary and can be called to answer for their questions at all times

The proceedings got me thinking about the rightness or otherwise of the statement credited to former South Africa president Botha that Blacks are not fit for democracy and modern government. For I know as a fact that what Donald Trump did is just a tip of the iceberg compared to the institutional mockery African leaders commit against their states and people daily.

I also did some thinking on the African likely response to such an act. Fellow Congress men and women from the region and political divides of the leader in question will perceive his actions as a regular survivalist driven act that requires no exceptional condemnation and strive so hard to defend same.

Ethnic proponents, regional leaders, religious organizations and all sorts of bodies sympathetic to the ruling party and leader would have reeled out Statements justifying and rationalizing the conducts and calling for calm and national reconciliation.

In all, I wish my fellow citizens will learn that respect for institutions and processes are very germane to development and progress, I wish we will understand that strong institutions and well coordinated policies drives progress and not dependence on the perceived integrity or other positive character traits of an individual leader.

I pray we begin to unlearn the political \’survivalistic\’ tendencies that rationalizes all kinds of conducts and begin to respect institutions and processes.

Good morning folks. Just some early morning thinking on global affairs. Do have a terrific day\”.
